First Two Lessons

The past two Saturdays I had my first 2 golf lessons ever.  It was a lot of fun.

Lesson #1:
Reviewed basic golf etiquette and terminology
Talked about handicap, par
Went onto the putting green and tried to hit the itty bitty ball into the itty bitty hole

Lesson #2:
Drove a golf cart around
Visited a hole and watched some people play
Talked about penalties
Went to the driving range and practiced hitting with a driver and 9 iron

What did I learn:
The 9 iron is the one with the little 9 on it  :)  Pretty sure I already knew this one!
If I hit the ball, it tends to go straight, so that is good!

I am so enthusiastic about this that I signed us up for another set of 5 lessons.  They will begin in May.

Just for giggles, I bought a hybrid club from Golf Galaxy on Tuesday for my neices.  They say they want to play too!  It only cost $8, so it was a steal!

I also grabbed one of the two books I have to reread again.  I figure that each time I learn more, I will be able to refine one more thing.  And these books are such easy reads - mostly pictures.  It takes no time at all to go through it!

In the beginning...

I think that I had always been interested somewhat in golf, but that interest never progressed into anything tangible.

Then, two years ago, I organized a golf tournament for my volunteer fire company, and there it was. Tangible interest. I convinced my husband to drag out a set of golf clubs that he inherited somehow, and looked like they were born in 1970, and take me to the foreign place known as the "driving range". We went twice with that set of clubs.

That time at the driving range caused me to progress into borderline obsession, in which I bought a set of clubs for my husband and myself, and two books, in that order. I read both books cover to cover, then had to get out there to put these things I had just learned to good use. So, we went back to the driving range. I applied the learned techniques, then went back and read the books again to pick up all the things I had missed and to understand some of the things that I hadn't really understood the first time around.

It became a private competition with myself. A rhythm developed in my head where I went through the postures: bend at the hips, bend knees, arms positioned, pull back, swing!

I didn't have time to take lessons, so I bought them for my husband. He wanted to learn too. Great! I could live vicariously through him until I could find the time to take my own lessons. Summer came and went, winter was long and cold, and then finally: spring! Renewed interest!

I went and signed up for a lesson at one of my local golf courses. My first lesson will be the subject of my next post. Stay tuned!
